Is my rim trashed ?

As some of you may have read I put a huge nail right through my back tyre last week and trashed the tyre.

I just put on the new set of conti gp 4000s this afternoon (thanks to the boardsies who reccomended them) and noticed that where the nail went through the tyre and tube it also went into the inside of the rim.

theres essentially a raised bunp on the inside of the rim. There are no sharp edges its smooth but its essentially a 6mm slightly raised bump.

Is that rim trashed or is it useable ? My instinct is because its smooth it shouldn't cause any punctures etc and the rim should be ok, but Id rather ask you guys who are a heck of a lot more knowledgeable than me.

Thanks for taking it in good spirits. :)

Unfortunately I am no rim expert. Hopefully you get the answer you're looking for.

When you say 'raised on the inside', do you mean raised pointing towards the hub? And so hollow where the tube lies? You should get away with that unless your rimtape is also perforated. In that case, you'll get occasional punctures where the tube bulges through the rimtape. New rimtape will solve that.

Also, a pic or two would be good.

great thanks. yes the rimtape is perforated and it is raised towards the tube not the hub. I should have taken pics but put the tyre on it . stupid me will try take a pic tomorrow and post it.

That'll cause a puncture risk. If you can flatten it and replace the rimtape you may be ok but you'd want to be aware of the possibility of the rim cracking later.

thanks. id hate to be on the bike and have a rim crack on me at some point whilst on busy roads that sounds dangerous. Looks like i should just flatten it for the moment and look at getting new wheels after payday.

talk about an expensive "puncture" after being on the bike only 6 weeks !!

at least they are cheap enough wheels anyway so not like i damaged something expensive. Any recommendations on new wheels ?

preferably under €300 for a set.

So the question has become... would you ride that rim?

    After that rim was nailed.

The question is answering itself, really.

If you rode it after the tube going flaccid would that be rimming?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 11,669 Mod ✭✭✭✭RobFowl

    So to summarise

The rim was nailed but it didn't penetrate
There are no rough edges or cracks but it is dented
You're not sure if its 1) Safe to ride or 2) whether its worth the risk

I'd say that its a question for an expert tbh
Riding rims that may or may not tear apart is a risky business

One final thing, could you clarify if its your own rim or some one elses?
If its some one elses then I'd say it depends on how well you know them or how good the actual rim looks.

You may be able to gently hammer the dent out using a probe.
If it's on the edge of the rim it might be worth using a lubricant when getting the rubber over it, at least until it stretches a bit.

You could use a Dremel with mild abrasive attachment to remove the bumps in your rim.

I would have a good close look at the raised section of the rim to make sure there are no cracks in the metal. Take the tyre and tape off and fill the hollow with araldite or superglue. When that is dry, rub it down flush with a bit of fine sandpaper, replace the tape (or repair the one you have - remove any sharp edges and cover with a small square of electrical tape) and refit the tube and tyre. I'd leave the raised section alone.
You might want to check the exterior for damage regularly - ie any cracks forming and if any do appear, bin the wheel - or at least the rim.
I recently bought a set of Shimano R501s for less than 100 euro (brand new from CRC) so for your budget you can get better ones if thats what you'd prefer to do.

Thanks trigger. Amongst the jest nice to get a solid answer :D

They are only Mavic CXP 22's so they are a cheap wheel anyway and I was going to upgrade them at some point anyway so I guess it just expedites the process.

Saw a pair of Fulcrum Racing Quattros for in and around my budget. So if anybody has an opinion on em would be great :)
